OBJECTIVE:

5.NBT.3

I CAN READ AND WRITE DECIMALS TO THE THOUSANDTHS PLACE IN WORD FORM, BASE-TEN FORM, AND EXPANDED FORM.

I CAN COMPARE TWO DECIMALS TO THE THOUSANDTHS.

About the Math

Our number system extends beyond the ones to decimal place values. These numbers represent values that are less than one and show parts of wholes. The value to each place to the right of the decimal point is found by dividing the previous value by ten. This is similar to how values to the left of the decimal point are found.a. Decimals can be written in several ways.
Standard Form: 8.634
Expanded Form: 8 + 0.6 + 0.03 + 0.004
Word Form: Eight and six hundred thirty-four thousandths. The decimal point is always read as AND.

b. When comparing decimals to the thousandths place, look to the greatest place value first. In comparing 8.64 and 8.46, both have 8 in the ones place so move to the tenths place. There are 6 tenths and 4 tenths, so 6 tenths is greater. You can also say that 64 hundredths is greater than 46 hundredths. So 8.64 is greater than 8.46. When comparing .74 and .749, rename .74 as .740 and you can easily see that .740 is less than .749.

5.NBT.4

  • I can explain how decimals can be rounded and why it's useful.

  • I can round decimals to any place.

  • I understand why the value of the digit to the right of a number determines whether to round up or down.

About the Math

Rounding is not the same as estimating. Estimating is grounded in reasoning and consideration of number, benchmarks, and context. Rounding is grounded in procedure and rule. Rounding can be useful. When rounding decimals, a number line can be a helpful tool. Suppose we want to round 3.24 to the nearest tenth. You need to know which two adjacent tenths the number is between. They are 3.2 and 3.3 The next step is to know what is halfway between 3.2 and 3.3 and that is 3.25 so 3.24 would be rounded to 3.2. Essential vocabulary for this standard includes: decimal place and rounding. WEEK 2

August 14, 2017

This week, we will be looking at 5.NBT.1 and 5.NBT.2. Work at your own pace. You have assignments in all four systems that are aligned to the standards/objectives.

Quarter 1: News

OBJECTIVE:

5.NBT.1

·         I CAN SHOW THAT EACH PLACE VALUE TO THE LEFT IS 10 TIMES LARGER IN A MULTI-DIGIT NUMBER.

·         I CAN SHOW THAT EACH PLACE VALUE TO THE RIGHT IS 10 TIMES SMALLER IN A MULTI-DIGIT NUMBER.

About the Math

Our number system is the Hindu-Arabic system. This means that the digits used are 0 - 9. The position of the digit in a number defines its value. This is a base-ten system. In a base-ten system, the place value is 10 times as great as the place value immediately to its right and 1/10 as great as the place value to the immediately left. In the number 12,486 the 2 is in the thousands place and has a value of 2000. In the number 45,268, the two is in the hundreds place and has a value of 200. Numbers can be written in several ways.

Vocab

Standard Form: 4,582,591

Expanded Form: 4,000,000 + 500,000 + 80,000 + 2,000 + 500 + 90 +1.

Word Form: Four million, five hundred, eighty-two thousand, five-hundred-ninety-one.

Essential vocabulary for this standard includes place value, place value names (ones, tens, hundreds, tenths, hundredths, etc), and digit. Visit the online dictionaryLinks to an external site. or visual math dictionaryLinks to an external site. for vocabulary support.

OBJECTIVE

5.NBT.2

I CAN EXPRESS POWERS OF 10 USING EXPONENTS.

I CAN EXPLAIN THE PATTERN FOR THE NUMBER OF ZEROS IN A PRODUCT RELATES TO THE POWER OF 10.

I CAN ILLUSTRATE AND EXPLAIN A PATTERN FOR HOW MULTIPLYING/DIVIDING BY ANY DECIMAL BY A POWER OF 10 RELATES TO THE PLACEMENT OF THE DECIMAL POINT.

About the Math

So WHY can we just add (or subtract zeroes) when multiplying or dividing by a multiple or power of 10. When we think of 4 x 60 we are considering 4 groups of 6 tens or 4 x 6 x 10. We know that we can make use of the associative property and multiply 4 x 6. This results in 24 x 10. Therefore, we have 24 tens or 240. If we make use of the pattern, we see that we can simply multiply 4 x 6 in the original consideration (5 x 60) and just add a zero.

But does this work as well with larger numbers? Let's consider 50 x 700. We can think of this as (5 x 10) x (7 x 100). We know that we can rearrange the factors. A result of doing so is (5 x 7) x (10 x 100). From here, we can multiply with a result of 35 x 1,000 (because 10 groups of 100 is 1,000). Now, 35 x 1,000 is 35,000. (See figure B below) When you multiply by a multiple of 10 or a power of 10, explain why you can add zeros. When you multiply 50 x 500. Essential vocabulary for this standard includes: powers of 10, exponent, and decimal. Visit the online dictionaryLinks to an external site. or visual math dictionaryLinks to an external site. for vocabulary support.
